A 10-year-old boy from Chicago was fatally shot early Sunday morning in Gary, Indiana, while a 50-year-old man sustained critical injuries in the same incident, authorities reported. The fatal shooting occurred amid investigations into a separate shooting incident in the city within the same hour.
Gary police received a report of a gunshot victim at a residence on the 200 block of Chase Street at approximately 12:49 a.m. Responding officers soon learned that the 10-year-old boy and the 50-year-old man had been transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake by private vehicle. The boy, identified as Montana Weathers, was pronounced dead at 1:43 a.m., with a preliminary cause of death listed as a gunshot wound. The child had been attending a family gathering in observance of the July Fourth holiday. A forensic autopsy was scheduled to take place Monday at the Lake County Forensic Science Center in Crown Point.
The 50-year-old man was stabilized at the hospital before being transferred to a Chicago-area medical facility, where he remains in critical condition, according to police statements. Authorities have not released the man’s identity.
