Federico Chiesa is embracing a fresh start at Liverpool under new head coach Andoni Iraola following a challenging period under previous manager Arne Slot. The Italian forward, who joined the club two years ago from Juventus, has struggled for consistent playing time, making only a handful of Premier League starts despite featuring regularly off the bench.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s preseason fixtures in Nashville, Chiesa expressed optimism about his prospects under Iraola, who has deployed him in a more advanced attacking role during recent matches. He scored in Liverpool’s 4-2 friendly win over Sunderland at Geodis Park and provided a key assist, signaling his intent to contribute more significantly this season.
“I am happy here at Liverpool. I love the club, I love the fans, I love everything,” Chiesa said, emphasizing his focus on impressing the new manager. “Last year I felt ready for a bigger role. This year, it is a new chapter. There is a new manager and I have to focus on that.” He also noted that his conversations with Iraola have mainly revolved around pressing and tactical positioning, with the coach favoring him as a striker.
Chiesa acknowledged that Liverpool’s previous season fell short of the club’s usual standards. The team finished fifth in the Premier League, narrowly securing a spot in the Champions League on the final day. “We were lucky to qualify,” he said. “Liverpool deserves more. Two years ago, we were Premier League champions. Last year, it was a tough season, and this season we need to do better, both domestically and in Europe.”
Despite being linked with a potential return to Italy—where Como and his former club Juventus have reportedly shown interest—Chiesa stated his current priority is to prove his value at Liverpool. The forward has two years left on his contract and hopes to solidify his position within the squad.
Chiesa also discussed his ambitions with the Italian national team. Having missed several recent call-ups partly due to fitness issues and injury, he expressed eagerness to reestablish himself on the international stage. Italy is currently in transition following their failure to qualify for the World Cup and the departure of coach Gennaro Gattuso.
Liverpool is actively restructuring under Iraola’s guidance, aiming to improve on a season that saw offensive struggles following the departure of key players. The club is linked with new attacking targets, including young talents who may provide competition for places.
