Eight Thai monks were killed and numerous others injured after an 11-year-old boy drove his family’s pick-up truck into a Buddhist procession in northeastern Thailand on Thursday. The incident occurred in Mukdahan province, approximately 600 kilometers northeast of Bangkok.
Local police reported that the child took his parents’ vehicle without permission and lost control before colliding with a group of about 30 monks and lay followers engaged in a pilgrimage. The procession had begun a 260-kilometer walk to Ubon Ratchathani province approximately 30 minutes prior to the crash.
According to authorities, five monks died immediately at the scene, with three more succumbing to their injuries later in hospital. Health officials said four monks remained in critical condition at Mukdahan Hospital, while ten others were seriously injured. Additional victims were receiving treatment for less severe wounds.
Security camera footage provided by the Ruam Jai Mukdahan Rescue Association confirmed the presence of the monks walking in a single file near the roadside before the vehicle struck the group. Police have taken the boy into custody and stated that he will be questioned once child protection officers are present to ensure his welfare. The investigation is ongoing to determine further details surrounding the incident.
