A seven-year-old girl died after drowning in a storm pond in southeast Calgary on Sunday, prompting a community response and calls for increased safety measures. The child, identified as Drihanna Matamona, was described by family members as a lively and affectionate girl who was non-verbal autistic but communicated using a talking device.

According to her godmother, Ninon Ignoumba, the family home has numerous safety features, including alarms on doors, but despite these precautions, Drihanna left the house unnoticed and made her way to the nearby pond. Her father, who had briefly stepped outside to their vehicle, discovered her absence and found her in the water. Emergency responders and bystanders attempted CPR after she was pulled to shore. The Calgary Fire Department reported that Drihanna was estimated to have been submerged for around 20 minutes and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred in the Legacy community, where the pond is located adjacent to a playground. The family has expressed concerns about the pond’s accessibility and safety, urging the city to install fencing to protect children from similar accidents in the future. Ignoumba emphasized that the risks apply to all children, not only those with special needs, and stressed the family’s desire to prevent such tragedies for others.

Drihanna’s aunt, Gloria Massengo, highlighted the deep impact of her loss on the family, stating their home feels empty without her presence. The family has received an outpouring of support from neighbors and community members, who have left flowers and notes near the pond, and have contributed more than $15,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and related costs.

The family has announced a candlelight vigil scheduled for Sunday at the site of the pond, inviting community members to join in remembrance. Attendees are encouraged to bring flowers, teddy bears, and plastic candles. A public funeral service is planned for the following weekend.

While appreciating the support, the family has asked for privacy and respect as they mourn their loss. They expressed gratitude for the thoughts, prayers, and financial contributions received during this difficult time.
