Adults with at least one parent who lived to 100 or older have been found to have a significantly lower risk of death and certain chronic diseases compared to those whose parents had shorter lifespans, according to a recent study. Researchers observed that the children of centenarians demonstrated notably reduced rates of cardiovascular disease and hypertension, suggesting that exceptional longevity and healthy aging may have a strong familial and genetic component.

The study, conducted by scientists from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Tufts Medical Center in Boston, analyzed data from more than 5,000 individuals drawn from three long-term international cohorts. Among these participants, over 2,300 were children of parents who reached 100 years or older, and their health outcomes were compared against more than 2,700 adults whose parents passed away before age 86.

After adjusting for lifestyle factors such as smoking habits, alcohol consumption, exercise frequency, and diet, researchers found that offspring of centenarians had a 42% lower risk of mortality, a 33% reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and a 32% decreased risk of hypertension relative to those whose parents lived shorter lives. These findings point to the possibility that inherited biological factors may contribute significantly to longevity and protection against age-related diseases.

“Centenarians offer crucial insights into what it means to age well,” said lead researcher Dr. Sofiya Milman, professor of medicine and genetics. She explained that the team sought to determine whether the health advantages seen in centenarians were transmitted to their children and whether these benefits stemmed solely from healthier lifestyles or from more fundamental genetic factors.

Dr. Eric Reed, a co-investigator on the study, emphasized that while lifestyle choices remain important, the data support the idea that some families possess inherent biological traits that promote sustained health and exceptional lifespan, regardless of environmental and behavioral influences.

The study contributes to a growing body of evidence that supports the role of genetics in healthy aging and longevity, offering potential avenues for future research aimed at understanding the mechanisms behind familial longevity and developing interventions that could help extend healthy life expectancy more broadly.
