Concerns have arisen over potential risks to children on the gay dating website Sniffies, which allows users to log in anonymously without verified age checks. The platform, which facilitates casual encounters, has been linked to several cases in the United States where men were charged with sexual offenses involving minors allegedly met through the site.

Dame Chi Onwurah, a senior Labour MP and chair of a parliamentary inquiry into online safety, described Sniffies as an “evident threat” to children, highlighting gaps in current online safety protections. The issue came to light after concerns about the absence of robust age verification measures on the site were raised with UK regulators and government officials.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) called the allegations “deeply concerning,” emphasizing the need for platforms to implement effective age verification and take prompt action against illegal content to protect children online. The department noted that the UK has introduced some of the world’s strongest online safety legislation, empowering the communications regulator Ofcom to enforce compliance.

Ofcom confirmed it is engaging with Sniffies to review the steps the platform is taking. According to an Ofcom spokesperson, platforms hosting pornographic material are required to introduce “highly effective age checks” to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content.

Sniffies, headquartered in California, has denied any wrongdoing and maintained that it complies with the UK’s Online Safety Act. A company spokesperson stressed that the legislation requires tech companies to make online environments safer for children but does not automatically hold service providers liable for crimes committed by third parties using their services. The spokesperson asserted that they have a zero-tolerance policy toward grooming and permanently suspend any accounts found to be involved in such behavior.

The company also stated that all users in the UK—whether free, paid, or anonymous—must complete an age assurance process before accessing pornographic content in public areas of the site, countering claims that age verification applies only to paying customers.

As investigations continue, authorities and advocacy groups call for strengthened safeguards on platforms like Sniffies to better protect minors from exploitation and abuse in online spaces.
