A new children’s book aims to help young readers navigate the emotional and practical challenges posed by crises such as conflict and other stressful events. Titled *Adam and Sarah in Times of War*, the book was authored by Dr. Jannat Behbehani, a medical doctor with a background in psychology and mental health. It seeks to provide children with tools to understand their emotions and take appropriate safety measures during uncertain times.

The story follows the experiences of two characters, Adam and Sarah, as they face situations marked by fear and disruption. Rather than dismissing children’s fear, the book acknowledges it as a natural response to uncertainty. It encourages children to focus on aspects within their control, such as listening to safety instructions, staying close to trusted adults, and helping others. Additionally, it introduces young readers to the roles of emergency responders, including firefighters and rescue personnel, thereby fostering an understanding of how these professionals work to protect communities.

The project was developed with support from the Kuwait Fire Force, with co-sponsorship from Safety and Training for Human Resources Development Co. Officials from the fire force highlighted the importance of embedding safety awareness early in life. Brigadier General Mohammad Bader Al-Ghareeb, head of the Public Relations and Media Department at Kuwait Fire Force, stated that safety begins with awareness within the home and emphasized the crucial role children can play by learning emergency procedures and safe behaviors. Chief Warrant Officer Ali Abdulaziz Aldagher coordinated the fire force’s involvement in the initiative.

*Adam and Sarah in Times of War* forms part of Behbehani’s broader effort to promote children’s emotional education. She has authored five previous books tackling various emotions and everyday experiences, all designed to equip children with age-appropriate strategies to understand and manage their feelings. Her work also extends to other products focused on supporting children’s mental health, emotional literacy, and communication skills.

The approach underpinning the book series advocates for introducing emotional coping mechanisms before children encounter overwhelming circumstances. By learning to identify and handle emotions from an early age, children can develop resilience that helps them face future difficulties. The role of parents and caregivers is emphasized as central to this process, as children often look to adults to gauge the seriousness of a situation and determine appropriate responses. Calm communication, clear guidance, and open dialogue about feelings are identified as essential components in helping children manage uncertainty.

While the narrative is set against a backdrop of conflict, the lessons it imparts are applicable to a range of unexpected or stressful situations. The goal is not to eliminate fear but to help children understand and respond to it constructively, with a clear sense of where to seek help. By integrating emotional coping skills with practical safety knowledge, the book encourages children to view preparedness as a source of security rather than fear.
