China’s women’s volleyball team is set to face the United States in the quarter-finals of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Finals tonight in Macau, with head coach Zhao Yong emphasizing the challenge posed by the tournament favorites.
Despite their favored status, the United States have historically struggled against China in recent encounters, having lost the last four matches between the two sides. Three of those matches extended to five sets, underscoring the competitiveness of their clashes. Zhao acknowledged the strength of the US team but stressed that his young squad is prepared to give their best effort.
China enters the knockout stage following a mixed set of results in the final leg of the regular season held in Hong Kong, where they secured just one win against Ukraine but were defeated in the other three matches. “The team went through some ups and downs during the Hong Kong, China leg, which I believe is a necessary process for young players to grow,” Zhao said. He added that the first three legs of the competition have adequately prepared the team to face the United States.
The Chinese roster comprises a combination of experienced players and emerging talents. Veteran captain Gong Xiangyu, middle blocker Wang Yuanyuan, and libero Wang Mengjie have been supplemented by promising newcomers such as Zhuang Yushan, Zhang Zixuan, Li Chenxuan, and Dong Yuhan. The squad is adjusting to the absence of established outside hitter Li Yingying and Wu Mengjie, placing additional responsibility on younger attackers in tonight’s crucial match.
Gong emphasized the team’s efforts to refine their strategies ahead of the quarter-final. “We hope to perform well in the upcoming matches and will give 100 per cent to challenge our opponents,” she said. She also noted that the team has implemented targeted training adjustments aimed at optimizing their performance.
The VNL Finals began yesterday at the Macau East Asian Games Dome with Italy, the defending champions, securing a decisive straight-set win over the Netherlands. Brazil followed with a come-from-behind victory against Japan. Earlier matches today include a bout between Turkey and Canada before China’s showdown against the United States at 7:30 p.m. local time.
Since the VNL replaced the FIVB World Grand Prix in 2018, China’s women have consistently reached the finals but are still seeking their first championship title. Their best results include bronze medals in 2018 and 2019, alongside several appearances in the knockout rounds. Last year, the team advanced to the quarter-finals after a strong preliminary performance but was eliminated in a five-set match against Poland.
Tonight’s match will test China’s ability to balance its young, evolving squad against a top-ranked American side, as they aim to continue their streak of success against a leading volleyball nation.
