The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang has announced the launch of the fifth edition of its “Bond of China-Malaysia Friendship” financial aid programme, which provides RM1,500 to qualifying students from underprivileged backgrounds in Malaysia’s northern states.

The initiative targets high-performing students attending independent Chinese high schools in Penang, Kedah, and Perak, as well as those enrolled in Chinese primary schools in Perlis. Since its inception, the programme has assisted more than 600 students. Initially, the financial aid was set at RM2,000 per student but was subsequently lowered to RM1,500 to extend support to a greater number of beneficiaries, according to Ding Qiao, China’s Vice-Consul General in Penang.

Speaking during an event at The Star’s offices in George Town, Ding highlighted the growing regional ties facilitated by the Malaysia-China visa exemption and enhanced air connectivity. Penang currently serves as a hub with direct flights to eight Chinese cities, including Guangzhou, Xiamen, Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Qingdao, and Chongqing. The city will soon add Haikou as its ninth Chinese destination, with Hainan Airlines slated to commence service on October 11.

Ding noted that these expanded flight routes have contributed to an increase in tourists, business travellers, and short-term visitors between China and the northern Malaysian states. She also pointed out that over 100 Chinese companies operate in the region, with the consulate actively facilitating their engagement by providing guidance on investment policies and connecting them with relevant local stakeholders.

The growing educational ties between China and Malaysia were also emphasized. Ding stated that the number of Chinese students enrolled at Universiti Sains Malaysia has surpassed 6,000, underscoring Malaysia’s rising appeal as a destination for higher education.

During the meeting, Simone Liong, general manager of client brand marketing at Star Media Group (SMG), shared insights on The Star’s development into Malaysia’s leading English-language daily by readership. She also discussed upcoming collaborative initiatives involving SMG and its subsidiaries. SMG’s deputy news editor, Tan Sin Chow, was also present at the event.
