China has achieved a significant milestone in its space program by successfully recovering the first stage of a Long March-10B rocket following a recent launch. According to official state media, the rocket's first stage separated from the second stage after liftoff and returned to a platform located at sea, marking the first occasion China has retrieved a booster for potential reuse.
This development places China among a growing number of countries pursuing reusable rocket technology, a method aimed at reducing the costs associated with space launches. The recovery of the booster was conducted from Hainan Island, a coastal region in southern China known for its beaches. The Long March-10B’s reusable configuration, as reported, is capable of delivering payloads up to approximately 35,275 pounds into low Earth orbit.
In comparison, the United States’ SpaceX has been a pioneer of rocket recovery and reuse. SpaceX has conducted more than 600 successful landings of its Falcon 9 first-stage boosters, returning them both to land-based landing zones and autonomous drone ships positioned offshore. The Falcon 9 has a maximum payload capacity of around 50,265 pounds to low Earth orbit and regularly transports astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station. SpaceX recently notable achieved a record by launching a single booster for the 36th time, underscoring its emphasis on cost efficiency through booster recycling. In addition, SpaceX is developing larger Starship rockets, designed to be recovered with giant mechanical arms at launch sites, with test flights underway in Texas and plans to expand operations to Florida.
Another U.S.-based company, Blue Origin, has also advanced reusable rocket technology, initially recovering its smaller New Shepard boosters in Texas following suborbital flights. It has since succeeded in recovering its larger New Glenn boosters on a floating platform off the coast of Florida.
Following China’s breakthrough, Japan conducted its own test of a reusable rocket, achieving a successful landing after its experimental vehicle’s flight the following day.
China’s entry into reusable rocket technology reflects an intensifying global focus on sustainable and cost-effective access to space. This latest achievement may signal an acceleration in the country’s ambitions as it seeks to expand its capabilities in satellite launches and other space missions.
