In response to China’s rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector and concerns over job security, many workers are returning to vocational education to acquire AI-related skills. This trend is particularly visible among young adults seeking to transition from unstable or low-paying positions into fields with stronger career prospects.
Chen Hao, a 26-year-old from Shenzhen—a major technology hub in southern China—exemplifies this shift. After five years working as a salesman at a local electronics factory without significant salary increases, he recently left his job to explore AI training options at several technical colleges. Although Chen recognizes that his vocational degree limits his access to top-tier tech firms, he aims for a desk job within the AI industry to avoid the physically demanding and travel-heavy routine he faced. For him, the appeal of vocational schools lies less in direct AI instruction—which he believes can be learned online—and more in their connections to industry professionals who may facilitate employment opportunities.
Data from recruitment platform Zhilian indicates that job openings for university graduates in China’s AI sector surged by 28.4 percent during the first five months of 2026. Demand for AI skills is expanding beyond traditional technology companies, with manufacturing accounting for 21 percent of AI engineer vacancies. This diversification underscores the growing integration of AI across various industries.
Chinese government authorities have supported this momentum by directing technical colleges to develop targeted training programs in emerging sectors such as AI. These initiatives aim to assist rural migrant workers, recent college graduates, and other jobseekers in securing employment. Each year, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security adjusts enrollment guidelines at technical institutions to reflect shifting economic priorities. In the previous year, the focus centered on protecting workers impacted by the US-China trade tensions. Now, AI occupies a significant position in vocational education curricula.
A recent report by Tsinghua University revealed that nearly 50 percent of China’s vocational schools have introduced introductory AI courses. However, given the complexity of AI’s underlying mathematics and algorithms, many institutions emphasize practical skill-building rather than deep theoretical knowledge. Fan Shiwei, an admissions coordinator at a technical college in Sichuan province, explained that students with scientific backgrounds typically focus on data labeling or smart manufacturing engineering, preparing them to manage AI-powered factory equipment. Others often learn how to use AI tools for content creation—such as producing short videos, images, or articles—a trajectory suited to digital media roles.
Fan also noted an uptick in interest from university graduates struggling to find work, with some vocational programs offering three-month AI courses that can lead to jobs paying at least 6,000 yuan (approximately US$886) per month. Many instructors involved are active professionals from local companies, further strengthening the schools' industry ties.
While vocational education plays a meaningful role in developing AI talent, experts caution that the sector should be guided primarily by market demand. Xiong Bingqi, director of the 21st Century Education Research Institute in Beijing, emphasized the importance of aligning training programs with evolving employment needs to ensure sustainable career outcomes for graduates.
