China’s bamboo industry has reached a significant milestone, with its annual output value surpassing 520 billion yuan ($74.8 billion), according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. The sector has expanded steadily in recent years, diversifying its product offerings to more than 15,000 varieties.
This growth is part of a broader strategy to develop bamboo as a sustainable alternative to plastic, supported by a well-established industrial system. Over the past three years, a targeted action plan has been implemented to encourage the formation of industrial clusters and enhance the overall ecosystem for bamboo production and processing.
The administration reported that the number of bamboo processing enterprises in China has increased to over 10,000, collectively employing nearly 29 million people throughout the industry’s supply chain. This expansion reflects both the economic importance of the sector and its role in rural employment.
Currently, ten counties across China each have bamboo industries with annual output values exceeding 10 billion yuan. The country’s bamboo resources are extensive, with approximately eight million hectares of bamboo forests yielding around 150 million metric tonnes annually.
These developments underscore China’s efforts to leverage its natural bamboo resources in support of sustainable economic growth and environmental goals, while fostering innovation within the sector.
