Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI has temporarily halted new subscriptions to its latest AI model, Kimi K3, following an unexpected surge in demand that has pushed the system to near capacity just days after its public launch. The Beijing-based company announced the suspension late Sunday, citing the need to prioritize existing subscribers while it works to expand its computational resources.

Kimi K3, released late last week, is a large-scale open-source AI model with 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the world’s largest in this category. The model’s launch has generated significant attention in the global technology sector, particularly amid intensifying competition between China and the United States in advanced artificial intelligence development.

Moonshot AI indicated it is rapidly increasing capacity and plans to reopen subscription slots gradually. The company shared similar updates on Chinese social media platforms, emphasizing overwhelming interest in the model that exceeded predictions.

Industry analysts noted that high demand typically strains the compute infrastructure of new AI releases, but this situation also points to Moonshot AI’s underestimation of user uptake. Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at technology research firm Omdia, explained that Kimi K3’s significant computational requirements present challenges for scaling access and require costly hardware resources, especially compute chips.

Since its release, K3 has ranked highest in front-end coding performance among major AI models on Arena, an AI evaluation platform. Its capabilities place it in direct competition with established models from U.S. companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

The emergence of Kimi K3 has also fueled concerns among American tech firms about increased competition from more affordable Chinese AI models, which could affect pricing and market demand in the AI sector. These developments come despite U.S.-led export controls that limit China’s access to some of the most advanced semiconductor technologies critical for AI development.

Chinese tech companies have accelerated their AI ambitions in recent months. Over the weekend, Alibaba previewed its new Qwen3.8 Max model, which contains 2.4 trillion parameters and positions it among the world’s most powerful AI systems, second only to Anthropic’s Fable 5. Additionally, last month Chinese startup Zhipu (Z.ai) released its GLM-5.2 model, which has seen rapid global adoption.

Together, these advances underline China’s growing role as a prominent player in the international AI landscape, even as competition between the world’s two largest economies continues to shape technological innovation and market dynamics.
