In Kuala Lumpur’s bustling Chinatown, the vibrant atmosphere of Petaling Street has inspired a pair of new cocktails at Jann, the bar located on the seventh floor of Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown. Mixologist Tharshan Velu has crafted drinks that reflect the street’s distinctive sights and cultural elements through innovative flavors and presentations.
One of the latest offerings, known as The Island in Chinatown, draws inspiration from the ubiquitous fruit stalls along Petaling Street, where traders sell produce in all weather conditions. The cocktail uses jackfruit-infused vodka as its base, combined with melon liqueur, Malibu rum, and coconut soda water. It is garnished with coconut flakes, delivering a tropical aroma and a refreshing sweetness reminiscent of the local fruit vendors.
Contrasting this light, fruity drink is the Kuri Nocturne, a complex two-layered cocktail designed to evoke the traditional hawker carts roasting chestnuts over charcoal stoves, another common scene in the area. This beverage features Martell Noblige cognac, coffee liqueur, chestnut syrup, cream, and cocoa bitters, culminating in a rich nutty aroma with a velvety chestnut foam topping.
These two cocktails complement Jann’s existing menu, which includes a selection of 10 signature drinks alongside various red and white wines. Among the established favorites is Dear Jann, composed of Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt, Lillet Rosé, jasmine soda, clarified citrus blend, and London Essence White Peach and Jasmine soda. Another locally inspired cocktail is the Merdeka 118, which incorporates Bacardi Carta Blanca, Cointreau, Giffard Blue Curacao, citric acid, and coconut. This drink pays homage to Menara Merdeka Maybank, Southeast Asia’s tallest skyscraper, which is prominently visible from the bar.
Accompanying the beverages are several bar snacks designed to complement the flavors. Notable offerings include onion rings served with a daikon soy sauce, combining a savory-sweet crunch, and prawn tempura featuring a light batter and juicy interior.
Tharshan Velu has also recently gained recognition by winning the 2026 Marriott International APEC Sustainable Bartender Competition (Indonesia & Malaysia) for his cocktail Refresh Garden. This drink blends torch-ginger-infused dry gin, clarified citrus, lychee syrup, and elderflower liqueur and remains part of Jann’s menu.
Jann operates daily from 4 p.m. to midnight and can be reached at 03-2035 7333.
