The Watermill Theatre is currently staging a lively production of *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang*, offering a family-friendly adaptation of the classic story originally penned by Ian Fleming and transformed into a musical by the Sherman brothers with a script co-written by Roald Dahl. This version embraces a handcrafted aesthetic that has resonated well with audiences, particularly younger viewers.

On press night, the performances by child actors Auora Breslin and Francis Adams were notably strong, complementing Christian Edwards’s portrayal of Caractacus Potts. Edwards’s interpretation of the eccentric inventor received positive comparisons to the widely recognized West End portrayal by Michael Ball two decades ago. Lydia Louise stars as Truly Scrumptious, the charming heroine whose presence is matched by the whimsical design of the iconic car, which features functional flying sequences, swooping maneuvers, and distinctive metal eyelashes. The car’s movement is facilitated by agile stagehands, contributing to the production’s dynamic visual appeal.

The cast also includes Samuel Morgan-Grahame and Mairi Ikegami as the exaggeratedly grotesque Baron Bomburst and his consort, adding a layer of humorous villainy. Susannah van den Berg takes on the role of the Child Catcher, maintaining the character’s menacing qualities while toning down the darker elements found in the original film, making it more suitable for a family audience.

The production distinguishes itself through the involvement of actor-musicians who create much of the music live, adding an immediate and engaging atmosphere. A standout moment comes during the "Me Ol’ Bamboo" stick dance, which extends beyond the main stage and into a circus tent erected on the theatre’s lawn, enhancing the immersive experience.

This rendition of *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang* is designed as an accessible and entertaining summer outing for families, combining nostalgic charm with inventive staging to deliver a show that emphasizes fun and participation.
