Hedge fund manager Chris Hohn has donated more than £1 billion in a single year, becoming the first British individual to reach this milestone. With an estimated net worth of £8.6 billion, this donation represents a substantial portion of his wealth. Against a backdrop of reductions in aid spending by the United Kingdom and other governments worldwide, Hohn is urging fellow billionaires to increase their philanthropic contributions.

Hohn established the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) in 2003, motivated by concerns over the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on younger generations. The foundation focuses on supporting vulnerable children across the globe and addresses environmental and social challenges linked to climate change.

Among the initiatives supported by CIFF are projects to expand solar power and clean energy access throughout Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The foundation also backs ClientEarth, an environmental legal advocacy group that has engaged in litigation against the UK government over air pollution standards.

Often referred to as the “green billionaire,” Hohn leverages his influence to encourage companies to accelerate efforts to reduce carbon emissions, viewing decarbonisation as essential for long-term business success. He has also contributed to environmental organizations, including Extinction Rebellion, a movement known for campaigning on climate issues through direct action.

Hohn’s philanthropy reflects his broader commitment to climate action and social equity, emphasizing the importance of private sector leadership amid what he sees as insufficient governmental response to the climate emergency.
