Chris Philp, the Conservative shadow home secretary, was near the Channel earlier this week monitoring migrant traffic when gunshots were heard from a French patrol boat approximately 900 feet away. Mr. Philp was being interviewed by a BBC television crew at the time.

French officials stated that the gunfire resulted from routine handgun training. However, Mr. Philp expressed skepticism about this explanation, suggesting that the shots were intended as intimidation to discourage coverage of migrant crossings.

The considerable distance between Mr. Philp and the patrol boat makes it unlikely that he was in any immediate danger. The incident drew comparisons to the historical shooting of Admiral Nelson, though the circumstances differ significantly. Whereas Nelson was reportedly targeted at a range of about 50 feet, the French patrol boat’s gunfire occurred at a much greater distance.
