Chris Rea, the singer known for his seasonal classic "Driving Home for Christmas," left a substantial inheritance to his family following his death last year. Rea, who passed away at the age of 74 just days before Christmas 2025, bequeathed an estate valued at £14.4 million before taxes and debts, which was reduced to approximately £12 million.

According to recently issued court documents, the late artist established a trust for his wife, Joan Rea, to receive the funds. The grant of probate, which permits access to the estate held in trust, was approved by the High Court this week. Rea had signed his will in October 2025, about two months prior to his death.

In addition to the financial legacy, Joan Rea will inherit her husband's personal belongings as well as the rights to any future royalties earned from his music. "Driving Home for Christmas," originally released as a B-side in 1986, initially charted at number 53 during a 1988 reissue. However, the song gained renewed popularity over the years and has appeared on the UK singles chart annually since 2007, reaching as high as number ten in 2021.

Rea, a native of Middlesbrough, enjoyed a long career blending blues and rock influences, but his enduring seasonal hit is perhaps his most well-known contribution to the music world. The arrangement of his estate ensures ongoing support for his family and continued management of his musical legacy.
