A significant expansion of the Christchurch Engine Centre, a joint venture between Pratt & Whitney and Air New Zealand, is set to secure the facility’s role in the global aviation maintenance sector for decades to come. The $250 million investment will underpin the overhaul of Pratt & Whitney’s geared turbofan (GTF) engines, widely used in single-aisle aircraft including the Airbus A320 and A321 families operated by Air New Zealand and more than 120 airlines worldwide.

Located at Christchurch Airport, the expansion will add 14,000 square metres to the existing facility and create at least 200 new technical roles, increasing the workforce from around 350–400 to over 550 employees. The enlarged centre is expected to reach full operational capacity by 2032, with the capability to maintain up to 140 GTF engines annually. The first engine overhaul is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The GTF engine technology, introduced by Pratt & Whitney a decade ago, has gained recognition for its fuel efficiency, noise reduction, and reduced carbon emissions. The design allows the fan to rotate at optimal speeds independently from the compressor and turbine cores, resulting in fuel savings of up to 20 percent and noise reductions of as much as 75 percent compared to previous engine models. Globally, GTF engines have contributed to savings of more than three billion gallons of fuel and a reduction of 30 million metric tons of carbon emissions since their introduction.

General manager Graham Jack expressed pride in the centre’s development and its contributions to Christchurch and the Canterbury region. The centre has built a strong international reputation over 25 years, particularly with the V2500 engine program, having overhauled more than 1,500 engines. It consistently ranks highly for customer satisfaction, supported by advanced inspection technologies including artificial intelligence and skilled engineering staff.

The expansion includes a new 4,000-square-metre soundproofed test facility where engines can be run at full thrust for performance monitoring and repair. The centre’s global client base encompasses airlines from the Americas, Asia, South America, and Europe, with over 90 percent of its workload derived from international customers. The largest client for its previous V2500 work has been American Airlines.

To support the increased demand, the centre is actively recruiting skilled technicians from local aviation engineering programs and abroad, including countries like the Philippines, Singapore, Europe, and South Africa. The centre also attracts tradespeople with experience in allied fields such as automotive and diesel mechanics, and runs a comprehensive apprenticeship program that exposes young trainees to a variety of technical disciplines.

Pratt & Whitney describes Christchurch’s strategic location as key to servicing the Asia-Pacific region, which is expected to experience the fastest aviation growth globally. Airbus forecasts passenger traffic growth in the region averaging 4.4 percent annually through 2045, outpacing the global growth rate of 3.9 percent. The expansion establishes Christchurch as a critical hub within the global GTF maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) network and supports the city’s role in the international aviation supply chain well into the mid-21st century.

Local businesses and specialised service providers are also involved in the construction and outfitting of the expanded centre, contributing millions of dollars annually to the regional economy. Staff express enthusiasm about the facility’s future and its importance for the local community, highlighting a culture of innovation and continuous development within the Christchurch Engine Centre.
