Filming for the Hallmark holiday movie “Holiday Touchdown: A Bears Love Story” is taking place in downtown Chicago under unusual conditions for a Christmas-themed production. On July 13, crew members and extras donned winter clothing—including coats, scarves, and beanies—while shooting scenes at Federal Plaza, where the city’s annual Christkindlmarket was recreated to resemble a festive holiday setting. Despite the chilly appearance, temperatures were expected to reach 86 degrees Fahrenheit, creating challenges for the cast and crew in maintaining the seasonal illusion.
The movie is part of Hallmark’s highly anticipated Countdown to Christmas lineup, which this year features 34 new films scheduled to premiere between October 16 and December 20. Producer Andrew Gernhard explained that while the network aims to shoot many holiday movies during the actual winter months between November and March, the volume of productions—ranging from 25 to 40 annually—often requires filming in warmer seasons.
“Holiday Touchdown: A Bears Love Story” marks Hallmark’s third collaboration centered on National Football League teams, following previous projects spotlighting the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024 and the Buffalo Bills in 2025. The storyline follows journalist Avery, portrayed by Lyndsy Fonseca, who is tasked with writing a profile of Darlene, an avid Chicago Bears fan played by Marsha Mason. Avery receives guidance on fan culture from Darlene’s grandson, Matt, played by Robert Buckley.
To create an authentic festive atmosphere, production utilized multiple Chicago locations, including the Bears’ home stadium, Soldier Field. The team also employed various production techniques to simulate wintry conditions despite the summer heat. The film is set to premiere on Saturday, October 17, at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time.
