The Church of England has issued a formal apology for the historical practice of forced adoption involving children in the care of Christian communities. Archbishop of Canterbury Dame Sarah Mullally acknowledged the significant pain, trauma, and stigma experienced by those affected, describing the impact as lifelong for many individuals and families.

In a video message directed at survivors, Dame Sarah expressed that the shame for these actions lies with the institution, stating, “You have nothing to be ashamed of, the shame is ours.” The apology comes amid ongoing recognition of the harm caused by coercive adoption practices linked to Church-affiliated settings.

It has been reported that certain cases connected to the Church could qualify for compensation of up to £660,000, reflecting attempts to address the lasting consequences faced by survivors. The Church’s acknowledgement marks a significant step in responding to past injustices and supporting those affected by the forced separation of families under its care.
