Cincinnati secured a significant victory on Sunday, defeating No. 8 Texas Tech 37-24 at home in a Big 12 matchup. The Bearcats, now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play, snapped a two-game losing streak with their biggest upset in nearly two decades.
Quarterback JC French IV was instrumental in the win, completing 19 of 30 passes for 172 yards and four touchdowns. French had a particularly strong finish to the first half, throwing three touchdown passes in the final 7 minutes and 48 seconds to turn a 6-3 deficit into a commanding 24-6 lead at halftime. His scoring connections included a 4-yard pass to running back Cole Tabb, a 5-yard touchdown to Malachi Henry, and a 2-yard strike to Lyviel Waters just before the half ended.
Running back Cole Tabb also had a standout performance, rushing for a career-high 173 yards and adding one touchdown. The Bearcats’ strong ground game helped control tempo and sustain drives throughout the contest.
Texas Tech, which entered the game with a 6-1 record and 3-1 in conference, was unable to recover from the early Cincinnati surge. The loss marked a rare setback for the Red Raiders, who had been ranked eighth nationally.
This victory marked Cincinnati’s largest win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 7 Rutgers 30-11 in November 2006. It also marked the fourth time in school history that Cincinnati has defeated a Top 10 team. Coming off a narrow loss to West Virginia the previous week, the Bearcats demonstrated marked improvement on both sides of the ball in this pivotal conference win.
