Cinema attendance in Qatar has continued to grow despite the widespread availability of streaming platforms, underscoring the enduring appeal of the theatrical experience and its social atmosphere. Official data from Qatar's Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) shows that cinema visits reached 3.54 million in 2023, up from 3.04 million in 2022 and 1.91 million in 2021. This follows a significant drop to approximately 580,000 visitors in 2020 due to public gathering restrictions amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The number of films screened also increased, rising to 5,497 in 2023 from 4,421 the previous year. Similarly, the total number of cinema halls expanded to 167 in 2023, up from 109 in 2019, reflecting ongoing investments in the sector despite the growing popularity of on-demand streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and Shahid.

Rather than competing directly with streaming platforms on convenience, cinemas in Qatar appear to focus on offering premium and immersive experiences that cannot be easily replicated at home. Technologies such as large-format screens, IMAX, 4DX motion effects, immersive surround sound, luxury seating, and VIP options have become key attractions.

Several moviegoers shared personal reflections on the appeal of cinema-going. Kenyan expatriate Zacchaeus Njuguna highlighted the communal experience, recalling his time watching "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" at O1 Mall, where the enthusiastic crowd enhanced the viewing. He emphasized that the combination of a giant screen and powerful sound is a major factor drawing people to cinemas.

Filipino expatriate Lyn J described cinema visits as a cherished family tradition both in her home country and in Doha, where outings to the theatre have become special dates with her husband. She noted that the atmosphere—including elements like popcorn, shared laughter, and the energy of the audience—adds to the movie-watching experience beyond the film itself. A memorable incident she recounted involved a sudden light falling during a horror movie, underscoring the unpredictable and communal nature of cinema visits.

Doha resident Janus T also praised the superior audiovisual experience of theatres compared to home viewing, noting the added excitement when audiences react collectively to movie moments.

The global cinema industry appears to mirror this trend of recovery and adaptation. The Motion Picture Association’s 2024 Theme Report indicates that worldwide attendance is rebounding as viewers return to theatres for major releases and visually ambitious films that benefit from large screens and immersive sound. Many moviegoers continue to choose theatres for the immediacy of blockbuster debuts, as illustrated by preferences for franchises like the 007 series and recent titles such as "The Odyssey."

Industry research further suggests that theatrical exhibition and streaming services increasingly complement each other. Studios are adopting release strategies aimed at maximising both box-office revenue and digital viewership, acknowledging that each platform offers distinct value to audiences.

Overall, despite evolving media consumption habits, cinemas in Qatar maintain a strong presence by emphasizing unique, shared experiences that supplement the convenience of home streaming.
