In preparation for the annual Khareef tourism season in Dhofar, Oman’s Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority has activated a comprehensive emergency support operation to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The initiative, underway throughout the Khareef period, involves the deployment of specialized personnel and equipment to manage the heightened movement and activity in the region.

This seasonal strategy includes dedicated teams trained in firefighting, land rescue, water rescue, and emergency medical response. These teams are supported by specially designed vehicles and technical resources positioned strategically across key locations such as major roads, popular tourist sites, mountainous areas, wadis, and coastal regions frequently visited during the Khareef season. Additional forward response points have been established on routes leading to Dhofar to reduce emergency response times.

Lt Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Tabuk, an officer in the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority’s Relations and Media Department, described Khareef Dhofar as one of the Sultanate’s most significant tourism periods, drawing large numbers of visitors both domestically and internationally. He emphasized the complexity posed by diverse and challenging terrain, including fog-covered mountains and variable weather conditions, which demands a high degree of operational readiness and coordination among various authorities.

Emergency control centers operate 24 hours daily, managing incident reports, allocating resources, and directing field teams. Technical systems monitor ongoing situations and assist in personnel and equipment management, enabling swift and efficient responses. On any given day, teams may handle incidents ranging from road collisions and medical emergencies at tourist destinations to rescue operations in mountainous or watery environments.

The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority also maintains logistical support to ensure continuous firefighting, rescue, and ambulance services throughout the season. Public safety awareness efforts accompany the operational deployment. The Relations and Media Department disseminates safety messages via media outlets and digital platforms, focusing on promoting responsible driving, adherence to guidelines at natural attractions, and discouraging behaviors that could endanger lives.

Lt Tabuk noted that the authority’s role extends beyond emergency response to encompass collaboration with other relevant bodies aimed at fostering a secure environment during Khareef. The initiative is designed to uphold Dhofar’s reputation as a safe, family-friendly destination while supporting one of Oman’s most important periods for tourism.
