A civil servant is currently on trial at Southwark Crown Court accused of fraudulently receiving £284,613 for allegedly holding five full-time government positions simultaneously while working remotely from home. Kashim Chowdhury, 55, who resides in Whitechapel, East London, faces allegations that he carried out these roles within multiple government departments between 2020 and 2023.
Court proceedings revealed that Chowdhury participated in remote work for the Department for Environment, Food Standards Agency, Home Office, and the Department for Business and Trade during this period. Prosecutors contend that he used his positions to claim salaries for more than one job at a time, an accusation Chowdhury denies.
Evidence presented during the trial detailed how Chowdhury conducted video meetings with the Department for Environment under the supervision of his manager, Dan McCartney. McCartney testified that Chowdhury repeatedly joined meetings with his camera off, citing IT problems as the reason. Despite McCartney’s requests, it reportedly took several months for Chowdhury to resolve these technical issues enabling the camera to function. McCartney further stated that Chowdhury never disclosed having any other employment concurrently.
The trial, which began recently, is ongoing as legal representatives for both sides continue to present their cases. No further hearings or outcomes have been announced as of yet.
