Recent concerns have been raised over the safety risks posed by residents storing personal belongings, including personal mobility devices, in common corridors and stairwells of public housing estates. Such practices have been linked to fire incidents and are seen as potential hazards that could impede emergency evacuations and firefighting efforts.

Common corridors and staircase areas in Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats serve as critical escape routes during emergencies. Obstructions in these spaces can delay residents’ evacuation and obstruct firefighters attempting to enter premises. Amid these risks, Loh Weng Mun, a local resident, has called for stronger enforcement measures to address the issue.

In prior communications with the town council and local Member of Parliament, Loh highlighted ongoing safety concerns stemming from items being stored in these shared spaces. He pointed out that current approaches primarily rely on advisory notices and gentle reminders, which have proven insufficient to deter residents from placing belongings outside their units.

Loh urged the Housing Board and related authorities to implement a strict ban on storing personal items in common corridors, supported by defined penalties for violations. He also advocated for the timely removal of illegal items to mitigate fire risks and maintain clear evacuation routes.

Currently, the prevailing method of management involves communicating guidelines and advisories to residents, but enforcement remains limited. The renewed call underscores the need for decisive action to prevent potential fire hazards and ensure safe living environments for all residents. Authorities have yet to announce any definitive policy changes in response to these safety concerns.
