Talk of New York and Bow Echo are set to renew their rivalry in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday, featuring a highly anticipated clash between two of the leading milers in Europe.

Charlie Appleby’s Talk of New York, a son of Wootton Bassett, carries strong form into the race following a smooth return victory at Newmarket and a commanding success in the Heron Stakes at Sandown. Initially considered a promising juvenile, Talk of New York has shown significant development this season, particularly after the addition of a hood, which appears to have enhanced his focus and consistency. Although he missed the 2,000 Guineas, his recent performances suggest he is rapidly progressing and ready to challenge at the highest level.

The main threat to Appleby’s colt is George Boughey’s Bow Echo, who remains unbeaten in four starts this season, including a dominant victory in the 2,000 Guineas. Bow Echo impressed with a professionally controlled performance at Newmarket where he outclassed Gstaad, a stablemate who is also in the lineup. Known for his preference for fast ground and the stiff mile distance, Bow Echo is widely regarded by his trainer and bookmakers as a formidable force, with the potential to improve further.

Gstaad, another high-class contender trained by Boughey, arrives at Ascot off a strong seasonal record, including victories in the Coventry Stakes last year and the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Despite his credentials, he has yet to overcome Bow Echo and may find himself chasing the winner again unless he produces a career-best effort.

Other participants include Power Blue, last year’s Phoenix Stakes winner, who showed respectable but unthreatening performances behind Gstaad and Bow Echo at the Guineas; Puerto Rico, a dual Group 1 juvenile winner with several front-running victories in France who finished fourth in the French Guineas on his comeback; and Lord Britain, a rank outsider whose recent Kempton handicap win provides optimism but faces a significant step up against the classier entries.

Royal Ascot’s opening day also features the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes over a mile for older horses. Notable Speech, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, is expected to benefit from a potentially strong pace set by stablemates First Conquest and Opera Ballo. The Breeders’ Cup Mile winner is favored to exploit the combination of a genuinely run race and his strong finishing kick.

The Group 2 Coventry Stakes for juvenile colts at six furlongs will see Joseph O’Brien’s Confucius, a high-priced purchase with a win at Naas, start as the favorite with Ryan Moore aboard. In the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes, a sprint over five furlongs, Overpass is regarded as a leading contender, although unpredictable draw conditions have made the race difficult to call. Mario Baratti’s mare Monteille also attracts interest, particularly for her potential on faster ground after spending most of her career racing on softer surfaces.

The card concludes with several notable contests, including the Ascot Stakes handicap over two miles, featuring Puturhandstogether, who hopes to recover from a troubled run at Chester, and the Listed Wolferton Stakes over 10 furlongs, where Map of Stars, trained by Francis-Henri Graffard and ridden by James McDonald, may improve with a drop back in distance. The day’s finale, the Copper Horse Stakes, features William Haggas-trained Valiancy, returning after convincing wins at Haydock and Hamilton with jockey James Doyle in the saddle.

Royal Ascot 2026 opens with a strong lineup of Group races, promising competitive and high-quality racing throughout the day.
