A large wooden beachfront home on Fire Island Pines was destroyed by a fire on Wednesday afternoon, officials reported. The blaze broke out shortly before 1:15 p.m. at the vacation property, which was built in 1976 by architect Steven Robinson. Despite several people reportedly being inside the house when the fire started, no injuries have been reported.

Responding to the emergency, firefighters from 13 Long Island fire companies worked to contain the rapidly spreading flames. Dramatic footage captured the multi-story home engulfed in fire before its roof collapsed, reducing the structure to burning debris. The fire also spread to the boardwalk providing access to the beachfront properties, according to the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. The full extent of damage to neighboring homes remained unclear as of Wednesday evening, but officials stated the fire did not appear to spread to adjacent properties.

Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control by approximately 4:40 p.m., concluding several hours of intense firefighting efforts. The investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing, with the Arson Squad involved, although no indications of suspicious activity have been found so far. Sources familiar with the investigation told news outlets that the fire may have been started by a barbecue.

The destroyed home had been described by its architect as an “ecologically pioneering, year-round vacation house” that harmonized with the natural dunes and surrounding environment through its use of climatically responsive design elements and cedar siding. The house was considered a total loss by officials.

Attempts to obtain further details about the incident from the Fire Island Fire District on Wednesday evening were unsuccessful. Authorities have urged caution in the area as recovery and assessment continue.
