Kobbie Mainoo has been assured of playing time in England’s upcoming Nations League fixtures following his omission from the squad during the recent World Cup. England head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the midfielder’s lack of minutes in North America and expressed a commitment to involving him in the current campaign.

Tuchel said he felt a responsibility to give Mainoo at least some playing time across the four Nations League matches. The Manchester United player did not appear in any World Cup games, despite being part of the squad. Tuchel emphasized that Mainoo’s conduct both on and off the pitch was exemplary throughout the tournament.

The coach explained the decision to limit Mainoo’s playing opportunities by highlighting the strong competition within the team’s midfield options. Tuchel cited players such as Reece James, Elliot Anderson, and Declan Rice, who were preferred in the World Cup lineup based on their experience and skillsets. He described Rice as a particularly unique player and noted that the coaching staff placed greater trust in others for tactical reasons.

Tuchel also revealed that an injury sustained by Mainoo before England’s third-place playoff against France further restricted his chances of appearing in the tournament, which the coach regretted. “It was difficult for him, difficult for me,” Tuchel said, acknowledging the missed opportunity to provide the young midfielder with valuable game time.

With a fresh slate for the Nations League matches, Tuchel intends to rectify the situation by ensuring Mainoo gains on-field experience in international competition. The coach’s comments underline his belief in Mainoo’s potential and his desire to integrate the midfielder more fully into England’s plans moving forward.
