Clay Holmes’ immediate future with the New York Mets remains uncertain as the team approaches the trade deadline on Sunday. The right-hander continues his comeback from a broken fibula, and his next appearance could be at the major league level, in the minors, or with another team.

Holmes recently made his second minor league rehab start, pitching four scoreless innings for Single-A St. Lucie on Tuesday. Interim manager Andy Green indicated the team will evaluate Holmes’ progress after a planned bullpen session later this week before deciding on the next step.

“Obviously anybody can count out and see where we are five days [from Tuesday] and it’s Sunday before the deadline,” Green said ahead of the Mets’ doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves. The Mets won the opener 3-2 but fell 1-0 in the nightcap.

Holmes and Freddy Peralta are the primary starting pitchers the Mets are considering trading. Holmes has recorded a 2.39 ERA across nine starts this season and holds a contract with an opt-out clause after this year, making him a potentially attractive asset for contending clubs.

On the offensive side, Francisco Alvarez has been a bright spot for the Mets, posting a .981 OPS over 15 games since July 3. During Game 1 of the doubleheader, Alvarez delivered a key RBI double in the fifth inning that broke a scoreless tie. He went 0-for-3 as designated hitter in Game 2.

Green praised Alvarez’s recent performance, noting his confident approach at the plate and ability to generate hard contact. “I see someone who swings with confidence. He impacts the ball like very few guys in the game. It comes off hot. There’s power — a huge hit in the gap for us today,” Green said.

Also contributing was Carson Benge, whose RBI double in the seventh inning of Game 1 gave the Mets a 3-2 lead. That marked Benge’s fourth go-ahead RBI in the seventh inning or later this season, tying him for fourth in Major League Baseball in that category.

The Mets’ pitching staff has been a strength recently, posting a 3.09 ERA—the third-lowest in MLB—since the All-Star break. Their bullpen leads the National League with a 2.23 ERA, ranking third-best across the majors heading into the nightcap against Atlanta.

As the trade deadline nears, the Mets face key decisions regarding Holmes and Peralta, with both players likely drawing interest around the league. The organization will balance the potential of bolstering the roster through trades with the desire to maintain pitching depth during the critical stretch run.
