French referee Clement Turpin has been appointed to oversee England’s World Cup quarter-final match against Norway, scheduled for Saturday. The 44-year-old official brings significant international experience, having frequently officiated in UEFA Champions League games involving teams managed by Thomas Tuchel.
Turpin is no stranger to England’s squad, having previously refereed their opening match of the tournament against Croatia. During that game, he awarded a penalty for a foul on Noni Madueke, as well as a retake following Harry Kane’s initial saved penalty kick. In addition to his World Cup duties, Turpin also officiated in England’s 2024 European Championship group stage match that ended in a draw against Slovenia.
His selection continues a pattern of reliance on experienced referees for high-stakes matches at the tournament, reflecting confidence in Turpin’s ability to manage games involving top-tier national teams. The quarter-final clash between England and Norway is expected to be tightly contested, with the referee’s decisions likely to play a significant role in the flow and outcome of the match.
