George and Amal Clooney have evacuated their estate in southern France due to wildfires affecting large parts of Europe. The couple’s 18th-century property, located in Brignoles in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, was among several areas threatened by the fires that have spread across France, Spain, Italy, and Greece.

In a letter addressed to Didier Brémond, the mayor of Brignoles, the Clooneys expressed uncertainty about the fate of their home. They also conveyed concern for local residents and reaffirmed their commitment to the community. “As we evacuate Brignoles, we want to emphasize two things: first, we hope you and the people of our city are safe; second, that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole,” the letter stated.

French authorities reported that the wildfire near Brignoles, located in the Var department, was contained overnight after burning approximately 130 hectares. The fire began on Wednesday, injuring four firefighters during containment efforts. Anne-Cécile Vialle, the sub-prefect of the area, noted ongoing work to secure the site and mentioned evacuees, including Dutch tourists Karina and Marnix De Roos and their daughter Valerie, who relocated to a hotel some distance from the affected zone.

Following a large evacuation that displaced roughly 84,000 people, officials have allowed residents to return to their homes in the region. The Clooneys, who acquired French citizenship along with their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, last year, own Domaine du Canadel, an estate spanning 425 acres. The property includes a 25-acre vineyard, an olive grove, a 22-metre pool, a lake, and tennis courts.

Nearby, the winery Château Miraval, owned by actor Brad Pitt, is also potentially at risk from the fires. The vineyard previously garnered attention due to legal disputes following Pitt’s divorce from Angelina Jolie.

The Clooneys’ southern France estate is among several properties the couple holds internationally, which include a residence on Italy’s Lake Como and a historic manor in Berkshire, England.
