Veteran sports commentator Warren Smith is preparing to return to calling National Rugby League (NRL) matches on Fox League early next season after a year-long absence due to multiple voice box surgeries.

Smith’s medical issues began in October last year when he was diagnosed with laryngeal carcinoma in situ, a precancerous condition affecting his larynx and vocal cords. Over the course of nine months, he underwent six surgeries to address the issue. Despite initial procedures, the carcinoma reappeared following the first three operations, requiring additional laser surgery in April.

More recently, Smith had two further surgeries aimed at restoring vocal cord function. These involved the insertion of a stent into his larynx for three weeks in August, a period he described as the most uncomfortable stage of his treatment. A month after the stent was removed, Smith reports that his voice is stronger than it has been since the 2025 NRL season, offering encouraging signs for his return in the 2027 pre-season.

Smith acknowledged the extensive rehabilitation still ahead, including frequent speech therapy and daily vocal exercises. He described everyday activities such as ordering food without straining his voice as significant milestones compared with his condition over the past year.

Throughout his recovery, Smith expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his family and Fox Sports, which he credited with being understanding and accommodating during a challenging period. Reflecting on the experience, he admitted that remaining on the sidelines was frustrating, but he remains optimistic about resuming his commentary duties soon.
