A section of State Highway 1 (SH1) along Archibald Street between Johnstone and Hassal streets in Tinwald is set to close overnight for road works beginning Wednesday, September 2. The closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night until Thursday, September 10, with the exception of Friday and Saturday nights when the road will remain open.

The planned work is subject to weather conditions and may be adjusted if additional issues arise. During the closure periods, a detour route will be in place for vehicles up to the 50MAX size limit. Southbound traffic will be redirected to turn left from SH1/Archibald Street into Johnstone Street, then right onto McMurdo Street, followed by a right turn onto Hassal Street before reconnecting with SH1/Archibald Street. Northbound vehicles will follow this route in reverse.

Motorists are advised to expect uneven road surfaces and temporary speed restrictions outside of closure hours as resurfacing efforts progress. These restrictions may continue after the main work is finished while new road markings are applied. No-parking cones and signage will be installed along the affected section of Archibald Street prior to the commencement of work. Vehicles remaining on the road within the closure area at the start of the work may be towed.

Access to local businesses and properties within the construction zone may be temporarily disrupted, although contractors will coordinate with affected parties to maintain reasonable access. Pedestrian footpaths are expected to remain open throughout the duration of the project.

The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has urged road users to exercise patience during the improvement works. The agency’s goal is to enhance road quality and safety on this stretch of SH1.
