The incident came to light during a Division Two match on Saturday between Saltburn’s second XI and Norton’s second XI, where video footage circulated widely on social media, attracting more than three million views and international attention.
The video appears to show Saltburn slip fielder Brian Devine clicking his fingers as the ball passes Norton batter Noman Shabir’s bat, creating the impression that the ball had made contact before being caught by Saltburn’s wicketkeeper Josh Bowes. Shabir was given out caught behind on his first ball and protested the decision, arguing there had been no contact. He later suggested the finger-clicking had been a repeated tactic used by the same fielder in multiple games, noting that dismissals ceased when the clicking stopped.
Saltburn currently leads the Division Two table by 17 points after a 159-run victory in this match. Their wicketkeeper Bowes has taken an unusually high number of catches this season, with 34 compared to his closest rival’s 19, adding to suspicions fueled by other teams reporting similarly questionable decisions in recent matches.
