The Central Municipal Council (CMC) convened its 56th regular meeting of the seventh term recently under the leadership of Chairman Mohamed bin Ali al-Athba to address a variety of matters concerning housing, public services, urban development, and community welfare.

A central focus of the session was the discussion of a report and recommendations from the CMC Public Services and Utilities Committee aimed at overcoming delays in the construction of housing projects for citizens. This initiative stemmed from a proposal by council members Hamad Khalid al-Kaabi, representing Constituency 18, and Fahad Hamad al-Buraidi, representing Constituency 19.

Another significant issue reviewed during the meeting was a proposal submitted by Dr. Badr Sultan al-Rumaithi, the representative for Constituency 4, urging the introduction of clearer regulations and standards for recruiting skilled workers and vocational professionals from abroad. The recommendation seeks to enhance the regulatory framework and oversight concerning the employment of foreign vocational labor, a move intended to streamline recruitment processes and ensure compliance with established requirements.

In terms of urban planning and infrastructure, the council examined suggestions related to the naming of streets across multiple constituencies — specifically Constituencies 4, 10, 15, and 18. These proposals originated from the Committee for Naming Areas, Neighbourhoods, Streets, and Squares and were referred to the council for further consideration. Additionally, a separate recommendation for naming a newly established street was deliberated.

The meeting also included a review of the Public Services and Utilities Committee’s updates responding to prior council recommendations. Among these was a focus on measures aimed at addressing issues related to begging, following an earlier proposal by Abdullah Khalid al-Yafei, representative of Constituency 17.

Discussions further covered the reevaluation of licensing procedures for private rest houses within residential neighborhoods, prompted by a proposal from Dr. Hassan Lahdan al-Mohannadi of Constituency 26. Progress reports on resolving challenges associated with subdivided villa housing were also examined, based on a submission by Walid Mohamed al-Emadi representing Constituency 8.

The CMC’s deliberations underscore ongoing efforts to improve municipal services, regulate labor recruitment, and enhance urban development in line with residents’ needs and evolving community standards.
