Digital transformation is fundamentally altering newsroom operations, requiring journalists to adopt new skills and approaches while maintaining rigorous verification standards, CNN Worldwide managing editor Mike McCarthy said during a recent conference in Doha, Qatar. Speaking at the “CNN Global Perspectives” event, McCarthy emphasized the necessity for media professionals to prioritize audience needs and deliver distinctive content across multiple platforms.

McCarthy highlighted the shift from traditional broadcasting to diverse digital formats, including television, video, social media, and text, as a driver for rethinking how news is produced and distributed. “Digital transformation brings enormous change and it means a change in not just working practices but a change in mindset,” he said, noting that even seasoned journalists must adapt to evolving formats to remain effective.

A central aspect of this evolution involves the integration of new technologies such as mobile phone filming, artificial intelligence (AI), and open-source intelligence (OSINT) methods. These tools assist journalists in verifying and geolocating footage, enhancing the accuracy and authenticity of their reporting. McCarthy stressed that with the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation, the responsibility to confirm the reliability of information has never been greater. “Never been a more important time to get the information right,” he said, underscoring the role of technology as an aid rather than a replacement for thorough journalistic standards.

Discussing CNN’s own response to these changes, McCarthy explained that the organization is analyzing audience consumption patterns to refine its content strategy. While immediate breaking news remains a defining characteristic of CNN’s brand, there is increased emphasis on distinctive reporting and in-depth investigative work to differentiate its journalism from competitors. This shift also reflects a broader industry trend towards subscription-based models, which compel news outlets to produce content that audiences find compelling enough to pay for.

McCarthy pointed out that while television continues to play a critical role in CNN’s international reach, the news organization is expanding its presence on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to engage with younger and more digitally native audiences. He noted that a combination of audience research and platform-specific expertise is essential to deliver news in formats that resonate with diverse user preferences.

Adapting to these changes, he acknowledged, presents challenges for journalists who must acquire new capabilities without sacrificing foundational reporting principles. “It’s not that those skills are now irrelevant, but we are all having to learn new skills and new ways of working,” McCarthy remarked, highlighting the ongoing balancing act faced by newsrooms navigating the digital landscape.
