CNN’s flagship event series “Global Perspectives” held its first Middle East and Gulf edition in Doha on October 29, convening international leaders and experts to discuss major global trends in politics, the economy, technology, investment, culture, sports, and media. The event, titled “Global Perspectives: In Doha,” was organised by CNN in partnership with Media City Qatar, which served as the host partner.

The Doha gathering was designed as a forum for exchanging ideas and fostering dialogue on the forces reshaping the global landscape. In opening remarks, Sheikh Dr Abdulla bin Ali al-Thani, Chairman of Media City Qatar, emphasized the significance of dialogue and mutual understanding in addressing contemporary challenges. He highlighted Doha’s growing role as a global hub for ideas and expertise, reflected in Media City Qatar’s efforts to create an integrated media ecosystem that connects international organisations with regional voices.

Sheikh Dr Abdulla noted that Media City Qatar houses more than 550 licensed companies, approximately 70% of which originate outside the Middle East. The facility supports a range of local creative projects, including over 30 initiatives in documentary filmmaking, drama series, films, gaming, and podcasts. Among recent achievements are two original Arabic drama series completed locally, and three licensed film companies from Media City Qatar chosen to participate in an international film festival this year.

The event also highlighted CNN Academy’s inaugural programme in Qatar, held the previous week, which offered hands-on journalism training to 35 university students across the country. The programme covered storytelling, mobile journalism, news verification, and field reporting, aiming to enhance regional media skills and capacity.

Sir Mark Thompson, chairman and chief executive of CNN Worldwide, praised Qatar’s sustained commitment to diplomacy and dialogue amid complex global challenges. He underscored Qatar’s contributions not only in conflict resolution efforts but also in fostering conditions for a cooperative and prosperous future. Sir Mark marked nearly 25 years of CNN’s presence in the region, noting that the Qatar operation has bolstered the network’s ability to provide comprehensive Middle East coverage to global audiences. He also acknowledged the opportunities Qatar presents for innovation and collaboration, describing the partnership with Media City Qatar as vital to the event’s success.

The sessions, moderated by top CNN anchors and correspondents, examined key themes under the event’s overarching topic, “The Invisible World.” Discussions explored emerging trends and forces reshaping artificial intelligence, the global economy, energy markets, sports, and cultural dynamics. The event aimed to deepen understanding of the region and challenge preconceived notions by fostering an exchange of expertise and perspectives between local and international participants.
