Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui emphasized recovery and preparation following his team’s 6-0 loss to Canada in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B match on Thursday in Vancouver. The defeat came just days after Qatar earned their first-ever World Cup point with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, marking a difficult turnaround for the Gulf nation.

The match against Canada was marred by significant incidents. Qatar was reduced to nine men after two red cards, including one for Homam Al Amin in the 33rd minute. The game also saw Canada’s Ismael Kone suffer a broken leg following a tackle by Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo, who received a red card for the challenge. Lopetegui expressed his concern for Kone’s wellbeing, stating that the injury was accidental and wishing the Canadian player a swift recovery. Canada later confirmed that Kone would miss the remainder of the tournament after undergoing surgery.

Lopetegui acknowledged Canada’s physical strength and pace, noting that the Canadian side quickly established a 3-0 lead by halftime. He described the match as particularly challenging for Qatar after the first red card, which shifted the momentum heavily in Canada’s favor. “They are a strong team physically and they have fast players. They scored very fast. It was very difficult,” Lopetegui said. “After the red card, it was different. It was a very tough match for us.”

Despite the wide margin of defeat, Lopetegui refrained from making excuses and praised his players’ effort under difficult circumstances. Looking ahead, he stressed the importance of recovery and focusing on the upcoming encounter with Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday. The coach highlighted the need to analyze the loss objectively and prepare his squad mentally and physically to remain competitive in the group stage.

Qatar still retains a chance to progress beyond the group phase, and Lopetegui’s priority is to rally his team for the final group match in order to maximize their opportunities in the tournament.
