Malaysia began their campaign at the World Junior Championships mixed team event with a 2-0 victory over Slovenia in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday. Despite the absence of their head coach, Pang Cheh Chang, the national squad maintained focus and composure throughout the opening match.

Pang, 52, is currently recuperating after being hospitalized three weeks ago following a fainting episode during the National Under-18 Championships in Alor Setar. Although not physically present in Egypt, his influence remains evident among the players, who have kept his guidance in mind during competition.

Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal, one of Malaysia’s key shuttlers, indicated that his coach’s advice continues to shape his approach on the court. “I will remember his message to me and do what he told me to do,” Redzuan said after the match. He emphasized the importance of staying calm and focusing on each point without worrying about future rounds.

Redzuan, who entered the tournament as the reigning Asian junior mixed doubles champion alongside partner Low Zi Yu, said he avoided reviewing the overall draw to prevent unnecessary pressure. He credited the coaching staff, including Hoon Thien How and Hazwan Jamaluddin, for reinforcing this mindset.

Malaysia is scheduled to face Poland on Tuesday, a match that could secure their top position in Group A1. The team’s steady start underscores their resolve to perform well despite the temporary absence of their head coach.
