Sri Lanka’s Energy Minister Anura Karunaratne has assured that there will be no disruptions to the country’s electricity supply, as coal imports for 2026 and 2027 are already underway.

The minister made these comments following an inspection visit to the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant. He emphasized that arrangements are in place to maintain an uninterrupted power supply over the coming years. According to Karunaratne, the process of importing the required coal has begun, with the first shipment currently anchored offshore near the power plant.

The Lakvijaya Power Plant, which relies heavily on coal imports, plays a crucial role in meeting Sri Lanka’s electricity demand. The timely procurement of coal is seen as essential to preventing power shortages and ensuring stable energy production.

Karunaratne’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns about energy security in the country, highlighting efforts by the government to proactively manage fuel supplies for the power sector.
