Oscar-winning filmmakers Ethan and Joel Coen have announced plans to collaborate on a new movie, marking a return to joint directing and writing after several years pursuing individual projects. The brothers confirmed their intention to reunite ahead of receiving the Prix Lumiere lifetime achievement award at the Lumiere Film Festival in Lyon, France.
The Coens, known for iconic films such as Barton Fink (1991), Fargo (1996), and No Country For Old Men (2007), have not worked together since their 2018 release, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Since then, Ethan and Joel have taken separate creative paths—Ethan has focused on documentaries and films featuring lesbian protagonists, while Joel is preparing to release Jack of Spades in 2027, starring English actor Josh O’Connor.
Joel Coen, 71, emphasized that there is no divide between the brothers, dismissing reports of a schism. “We’re getting old. It better be the near future,” he said. Both indicated they have several script ideas, some previously written and others still in development, but declined to share specifics about the upcoming project. Ethan, 69, suggested the new film is unlikely to be in the fantasy genre, expressing skepticism about the current trend of mainstream movies focusing heavily on fantasy, science fiction, horror, and comic book adaptations. “It’s a sad thing for us because we’ve never been drawn to those kinds of things,” he said.
Despite Joel’s role as executive producer on the ongoing Fargo television adaptation, the brothers do not plan to create a TV series together. Joel explained that the storytelling structure of television differs from their approach to filmmaking, noting, “It’s just not what we do. It’s not the way our brains think about stories.”
Their last collaborative works—The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and the satirical comedy Hail, Caesar! (2016)—cemented their reputation for offbeat, character-driven narratives. The Coens have won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Fargo and three Oscars for No Country For Old Men.
As they prepare to reunite, the Coen brothers’ forthcoming project is highly anticipated by industry observers and fans, who look forward to the distinctive tone and storytelling that have defined their careers.
