Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed optimism about the continued progress of forward Cole Palmer following the player’s strong start to the 2026/27 Premier League season. Palmer, 24, has scored two goals and provided two assists in Chelsea’s first four league matches, signaling a significant return to form after a challenging previous campaign.

Palmer struggled with a groin injury throughout the 2025/26 season, which contributed to his exclusion from the England squad for the recent World Cup. The attacker took an unusual summer break—the first of his senior career—which has seemingly rejuvenated him ahead of the current campaign.

Alonso praised Palmer’s attitude and preparation, emphasizing the player’s desire to enjoy his performances and connect with teammates on the pitch. “There’s more to come,” Alonso said, indicating that the forward’s best performances may still lie ahead. “He’s a top, top-level player. The main thing for him is to feel good.”

Palmer is currently part of one of the Premier League’s most productive attacking trios alongside Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro. At least one member of this group has scored in every Chelsea league match so far. Despite the team’s attacking efficiency—statistically the second-best in the league—Alonso acknowledges defensive struggles, with Chelsea having conceded nine goals in their opening four fixtures.

“We can do better in defense,” Alonso admitted ahead of Chelsea’s London derby against Brentford. “In attack, we are doing well. We need to find the right balance between defense and attack and not concede so many goals. I am sure we will do it.”

The manager remained vague on the fitness status of several key players ahead of the match at Brentford. Moises Caicedo, who has appeared only once this season due to a calf injury, along with Jordan Henderson (arm), Marco Palestra (quad), Reece James, and Joao Pedro, all face fitness doubts. James missed part of Chelsea’s training on Tuesday, while Joao Pedro was recently left out of Brazil’s squad because of injury concerns.

Chelsea’s expected lineup for the match includes goalkeeper Martinez behind a back three of Fofana, Lacroix, and Colwill, with a midfield quartet consisting of Neto, James, Lavia, and Hato. Palmer, Rogers, and Welbeck are set to lead the attack.

The fixture kicks off with referee Andy Madley in charge, as Chelsea seek to address their defensive vulnerabilities while maintaining their attacking momentum against their West London rivals.
