Cole Palmer is preparing for a fresh start with Chelsea after a challenging period marked by injury setbacks and his exclusion from England’s 2026 World Cup squad. The 24-year-old midfielder, who spent much of the off-season on an extended seven-week break, described the adjustment to downtime as difficult, revealing that he struggled initially with the sudden lack of regular football.
Palmer, who has been a consistent presence in Chelsea’s lineup in previous seasons, found himself sidelined this summer following a below-par campaign and a persistent groin injury. The injury, which required daily management and was considered complex by medical staff, also affected his chances of making the England squad. Although surgery was discussed, Palmer ultimately decided against the procedure.
The decision to rest Palmer during the World Cup break was a first in his professional career, and he acknowledged the unusual experience of being away from competitive action. “Not in the first week. It was strange. I didn’t know where to go,” Palmer said, reflecting on his time off. After several weeks, however, he admitted to growing restless and even eager to return to football.
Chelsea’s new head coach, Xabi Alonso, has been in contact during the challenging period, offering support after Palmer learned he would not be heading to Qatar. Alonso has also shared his tactical plans for the player, expressing a desire to utilize Palmer as a No.10, operating just behind the main striker in Chelsea’s formation.
Palmer said the World Cup snub has provided motivation to regain his best form as the Premier League season approaches. “If someone tells you you’re essentially not good enough to get in the squad, then you’re going to think, ‘All right then, I’m going to try to go that extra bit harder,’” he commented ahead of Chelsea’s opening league match against Fulham on August 24.
For now, Palmer is focusing on his club commitments and has put aside thoughts of his international future. “I’m not really thinking about that now. I’m just looking forward to the season with Chelsea,” he added.
Following a difficult summer, Palmer appears ready to channel his frustration into performance on the pitch as he aims to return to the standards that once made him a regular for both club and country.
