An 18-year-old college student from Navi Mumbai drowned in a dam at Palsdari, Karjat, during a field trip on Tuesday evening, authorities reported. The body of Aryan Thapar, a resident of Ghansoli and student at Bharati Vidyapeeth College, Kharghar, was recovered the following morning.
Thapar had traveled to Karjat with five classmates to work on a college project. After completing their assignment, the group was heading back when their vehicle broke down near the Palsdari dam. Two students went to Khopoli to find a mechanic, while Thapar and two others remained close to the dam.
According to Sub-divisional Police Officer Rahul Gaikwad, Thapar entered the water for a swim and completed two rounds before attempting a third. It was during this final swim that he drowned.
A search operation was initiated immediately, but no trace of Thapar was found on Tuesday night, prompting the filing of a missing person report at the Karjat police station. The search resumed the next morning, resulting in the recovery of his body.
The incident is under investigation, with police continuing to gather details on the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
