Colombia secured a 1-0 victory over Ghana on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, becoming the final team to advance to the World Cup round of 16. The South American side dominated the match, recording eight shots on target, but were only able to convert once, with Jhon Arias scoring an early goal to secure the win.
The Colombian team will face Switzerland in the round of 16 on Wednesday in Vancouver, aiming to progress further into the quarter-finals. Despite the victory, Colombia showed signs of inefficiency in front of goal, a concern voiced by several players.
Kingsley Díaz, who was named man of the match, acknowledged the team’s overall solid performance but noted the need for greater composure and sharper finishing. Díaz, a winger who scored 15 goals last season for Bayern in the Bundesliga, admitted his own struggles with confidence in front of goal. “I had chances to convert,” he said, adding that his confidence was not yet at full strength but that he was improving with each game. “I felt much better in today’s match than in the previous one, without a doubt.”
Ghana, by contrast, struggled to create clear opportunities and failed to test the Colombian defense effectively throughout the match. The West African side was unable to break down Colombia’s organization and control of the game.
With Colombia advancing, the attention now turns to their upcoming match against Switzerland, where they will seek to improve their finishing and composure to continue their World Cup campaign.
