Colombia’s president-elect Abelardo De la Espriella has called for acceptance of the election results following a contentious runoff in June. Speaking on July 11, De la Espriella emphasized the need to respect the "sovereign will of the Colombian people" as expressed at the ballot box, urging citizens to uphold the democratic process without ambiguity.

The right-wing leader’s remarks came amid mounting tensions after outgoing President Gustavo Petro questioned the legitimacy of the vote. Petro, who was constitutionally barred from seeking re-election, claimed to have evidence of voting irregularities and has encouraged his supporters to stage protests on July 20, coinciding with his planned farewell address as head of state.

De la Espriella, who is backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, rejected Petro’s allegations, asserting without providing evidence that the incumbent president may be preparing a coup attempt prior to the scheduled inauguration on August 7. Petro, however, has reiterated his commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.

The international community has weighed in on the situation. On July 9, the United States and 12 Latin American countries issued a joint statement urging all Colombian authorities to facilitate a nonviolent transition. The statement was signed by members of the "Shield of the Americas" alliance, a regional security initiative launched in March under the Trump administration with a focus on combating drug trafficking. The participating countries include Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, alongside the United States.

De la Espriella praised this support, noting that international endorsement of his electoral victory underscores the importance of maintaining constitutional order and ensuring a stable political transition in Colombia. He also expressed his intention to join the Shield of the Americas initiative to bolster efforts against organized crime in the region.

As Colombia approaches the August 7 inauguration, the contrasting narratives from De la Espriella and Petro have highlighted the challenges facing the nation’s democratic institutions amid a highly polarized political climate. Observers are closely monitoring developments to assess whether the transition proceeds smoothly or if tensions escalate further.
