The Washington Commanders are navigating a series of injuries and roster challenges, particularly at the quarterback position, as they prepare for their upcoming game against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota sustained a sprained MCL in his right knee during Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. This marks the second time this season he has suffered the same injury, having initially sprained it during the preseason in August, which sidelined him for about three weeks. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Mariota’s injury status but did not provide a specific timetable for his return. The team is considering placing him on injured reserve, which would allow him to return later in the season. Mariota had started two games in place of starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, who dislocated his left elbow on September 20.

Despite the setbacks, Daniels is expected to start on Sunday after being a limited practice participant last week and progressing to full participation this week. Quinn indicated that barring any last-minute issues, Daniels will return to the lineup three weeks after his elbow injury. When Mariota was sidelined against the Colts, rookie Athan Kaliakmanis, the third-string quarterback, stepped in, highlighting the team’s thin options at the position. Quinn also mentioned that Sam Hartman, currently on the practice squad, could be promoted to serve as additional quarterback depth.

The injury concerns extend beyond the quarterback unit. Wide receiver Jaylin Lane suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle in the Colts game, requiring surgery and ending his season. Lane also served as the team’s primary kick and punt returner. Several other players remain sidelined due to various injuries, including defensive end Charles Omenihu (groin, MRI pending), right guard Sam Cosmi (concussion), safety Nick Cross (internal injury), running back Rachaad White (shoulder), and wide receiver Terry McLaurin (hamstring).

However, some players are nearing potential returns from injured reserve. Cornerback Trey Amos, left tackle Laremy Tunsil, defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton, and running back Jeremy McNichols may be activated soon. Quinn specifically noted Amos, defensive lineman Deatrich Wise, and McNichols as candidates to resume practice in the near future.

As the Commanders contend with these injuries, their depth and health will be key factors as they aim to maintain competitiveness in the upcoming weeks.
