The Washington Commanders have finalized their initial 53-player roster ahead of the 2026 NFL season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 13, although decisions remain on some depth chart positions and potential roster adjustments. The team announced multiple cuts across offense and defense as it trimmed from training camp numbers.

On the offensive side, the quarterback room features Jayden Daniels as the starter, backed by veterans Marcus Mariota and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis. Kaliakmanis edged out teammate Hartman in the final weeks of camp and is expected to serve as the primary backup if Mariota’s recovery from a sprained MCL takes longer than anticipated. The running back group includes Jacory Croskey-Merritt as the lead back, supported by Rachaad White and Kaytron Allen, with Washington likely to promote an additional player from the practice squad due to C.J. McNichols’ absence.

The wide receiver corps is deep with seven players, featuring starters Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs, and Luke McCaffrey. Notably, Dyami Brown and Trey-Ion Burks have earned the coaches’ confidence for their versatility and potential, despite Burks’ past injury challenges. The tight end position includes Chig Okonkwo as the starting receiver, supported by John Bates, Ben Sinnott, and Colson Yankoff. Offensive coordinator David Blough plans to utilize multiple tight end formations, though concerns remain about this group’s blocking versatility.

Washington’s offensive line is a primary area of concern. The starting five includes Brandon Coleman, Chris Paul, Nick Allegretti, Sam Cosmi, and Josh Conerly Jr. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is sidelined with a torn triceps and expected to be placed on injured reserve. Center Nick Allegretti, recovering from a calf injury, may not be ready for Week 1, potentially elevating backup Matt Gulbin to the starting role. Allegretti’s long-term effectiveness at center is uncertain given his career mostly spent as a guard. Undrafted rookie Tanoa Togiai has emerged late in camp to secure a backup guard spot.

Defensively, the Commanders will start Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw at defensive tackle, with Tim Settle providing depth on the interior. While this trio offers stout run defense, the group’s pass rush production was limited last season. Defensive end Charles Omenihu currently serves as the lone starter at that position, though additional depth is expected once key players Armstrong and Wise return from injuries. The outside linebacker unit, led by Odafe Oweh, faces availability questions due to calf and knee injuries affecting Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson. Fellow linebackers Joshua Josephs and Javontae Jean-Baptiste are expected to see increased playing time in their absence.

Inside linebacker duties will primarily fall to Sonny Styles and Frankie Luvu, while Leo Chenal is expected to contribute frequently both as a linebacker and edge rusher. On the defensive backfield, the Commanders start three cornerbacks—Amik Robertson, Mike Sainristil, and Rasul Douglas—with anticipated positional shifts to cover for injured players. Safety Nick Cross is the clear starter at strong safety, while Jeremy Reaves and Quan Martin will share time at free safety in various formations that include three-safety looks.

Special teams will feature rookie kicker Drew Stevens, marking the 20th kicker signed by the franchise since 2020. Stevens boasts a powerful leg but will need to prove consistency to secure the role. Punt duties will be handled by veteran Tress Way, with Tyler Ott snapping.

Washington has until 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday to finalize claims on waived players with fewer than four accrued NFL seasons. Vested veterans released are immediate free agents. The team can also sign up to 17 players to its practice squad as it continues to adjust personnel ahead of the regular season.
