The Tel Aviv District Planning and Building Committee approved plans on Tuesday for the construction of a permanent embassy for the United Arab Emirates in Herzliya Pituach, marking a significant step in solidifying diplomatic infrastructure between Israel and the UAE. This development comes six years after the signing of the Abraham Accords, which established formal relations between the two countries.

The approved plan allows for a building of up to 15 stories, encompassing office spaces as well as residential quarters for the ambassador and diplomatic staff. The decision is expected to facilitate progress toward the completion of the UAE’s permanent diplomatic mission in Israel.

Herzliya Pituach was confirmed as the site for the embassy following thorough negotiations involving multiple parties and a complex selection process. The Israel Land Authority (ILA) noted that the search for a permanent location originated from a request by the Prime Minister’s Office. The choice of Herzliya aligns with the city’s broader strategic objectives to strengthen ties with countries party to the Abraham Accords.

Mayor Yariv Fisher welcomed the approval and emphasized the city’s intention to deepen cooperation with partner nations in areas such as education, transportation, technology, tourism, and environmental initiatives. He highlighted the importance of promoting coexistence and peace in the Middle East through these collaborations.

The timing of the approval coincides with ongoing regional tensions, which have occasionally strained the UAE-Israel relationship since the accords’ inception. Nonetheless, the embassy’s planned establishment underscores a commitment to maintaining and expanding diplomatic engagement despite the challenges.

The move reflects Israel’s broader diplomatic efforts to institutionalize relations with new partners in the region and to create physical infrastructures that support ongoing bilateral and multilateral initiatives. The embassy in Herzliya Pituach will serve as a focal point for such endeavors between Israel and the UAE moving forward.
